What FilterBank HD v7 brings to a session
Note: This product is the HD version for AAX DSP users. The Native version is also available.
The EQ revue rolls into your computer-based recording system with McDSP's FilterBank, a collection of great EQs that gives you an astonishing degree of control. FilterBank can emulate any EQ - tube driven or solid-state, vintage or modern, fat or thin. You can adjust all the filter design and critical equalizer parameters, or design your own distinct custom EQ. FilterBank's trio of plug-ins include the E6060 console-style parametric model, the F202 steep highpass and lowpass model, and the P606 parametric EQ with variable Q modes. FilterBank HD v7 in the studio
FilterBank HD v7 in an HDX workflow
FilterBank HD v7 is the HD edition of the FilterBank family. McDSP positions current HD licences for AAX DSP users while retaining AAX Native, AU and VST3 access. That distinction matters most in Pro Tools HDX sessions where DSP placement, voice use and predictable tracking behaviour are part of the system design, not merely another format badge.
The current product facts include Analog Saturation Modeling provided in each EQ/filter band to prevent digital clipping, Two activations per license / subscription and Double Precision Processing. Treat those as checkpoints for this exact HD SKU. They do not mean that every host runs the DSP instance or that an HD purchase is automatically useful to a producer who works entirely on native CPU.
Planning DSP and native instances
Build a deliberate split between DSP-critical and CPU-native processing before loading FilterBank HD v7 across a template. Tracking inputs, low-latency cue paths and large post-production sessions may justify DSP allocation; offline sound-design chains and flexible mix experiments can remain native. The goal is stable routing, not filling every available chip because the licence permits it.
When FilterBank moves between DSP and Native, store a named reference preset and print a short comparison. Confirm automation, side-chain routing, delay compensation and overs after the switch. A technically successful plug-in conversion can still alter session resources or monitoring behaviour in ways that matter during a vocal take or a time-sensitive recall.
Production role and musical decisions
For this processor, useful jobs include resonance control, kick-and-bass separation and broad tonal balance. Listen specifically for band interaction, filter slope, gain staging and the musical difference between narrow repair work and broad tonal moves. A repeatable HDX workflow begins with one audible objective and a bypass level that makes the result honest.
Start with level-matched bypass, identify the audible problem in the full arrangement, and decide whether a filter, shelf or bell is the smallest effective move. For FilterBank HD v7, Sweep only to locate an issue; return to a musically judged gain and bandwidth. Apply that method to FilterBank HD v7 on the source that creates the real mix problem, then save a restrained state and a stress-test state. The contrast reveals whether the algorithm improves the record or only produces an impressive soloed effect.
Compatibility and authorisation
McDSP currently lists AAX DSP, AAX Native, AU and VST3 for HD plug-ins. Version 7 no longer supports legacy VST. Current support covers listed macOS and Windows versions, Intel and Apple silicon, but a production machine should be checked against the live support page before an OS or DAW upgrade.
FilterBank HD v7 uses iLok authorisation, and current v7 licences include two activations. A compatible USB iLok, supported machine activation or iLok Cloud may be available depending on the installed version and workflow. Two activations do not create two simultaneous Cloud sessions, so document the actual licence location before moving between rooms.
HD recall and handoff notes
Before delivering a session that relies on FilterBank HD v7, create a compact recall package: a screenshot or preset, a processed reference, an unprocessed fallback and a note identifying which instances use AAX DSP. Ask the receiving room whether its HDX generation, installer and iLok setup match the originating system. If they do not, render the time-critical path and leave the editable Native alternative disabled beside it. This approach keeps resonance control reproducible while preserving options for later revisions. It also prevents a last-minute transfer from becoming an experiment with DSP allocation, missing licences or unverified software updates.
Three FilterBank processors, three different starting points
FilterBank HD v7 is a family of three related equalizers rather than one oversized interface. E606 combines parametric bands, high and low shelves plus high- and low-pass filters. F202 is the dedicated filtering tool, with steep high- and low-pass operation and resonant-Q control. P606 concentrates on parametric equalisation with selectable Q behaviour. For an HDX project, choose the member by task before touching frequency: E606 for a complete channel shape, F202 for boundary and resonant-filter work, and P606 when focused parametric control is the main job.
Build three short presets around the same vocal, drum or synth track source and level-match them. Within the HD edition, the exercise prevents a corrective cut, a creative resonant sweep and an overall tonal curve from becoming one undocumented setting. It also makes the product-family page useful after purchase because the correct FilterBank component can be recalled by role.
Peak, Slope and Dip in the E606 shelves
McDSP’s Peak-Slope-Dip controls expose the shape around the E606 shelving transition. Peak adjusts overshoot, Slope changes the transition and Dip controls undershoot. That is different from choosing only frequency and gain on a conventional shelf. Begin with a broad low or high shelf, keep the move small and change one shape parameter at a time while watching the neighbouring frequency range.
On a vocal, the high shelf can add air while Dip limits an unwanted upper-mid rise; on a bass or drum bus, the low shelf can add weight without leaving the transition uncontrolled. Do not judge the curve from the graph alone. Bypass at matched level and listen for phasey edges, hollowed low mids or a presence region that becomes louder than the musical detail it was meant to reveal.
F202 slopes, resonance and creative filtering
In the HD edition, the F202 offers filter slopes of 6, 12, 18 and 24 dB per octave plus resonance control. A steeper slope is not automatically cleaner: it changes the transition and can make resonance more obvious. Audition a kick-and-bass passage at each slope before DSP setting the cutoff, then repeat on a noise layer or synth effect when the filter is intended as a creative movement rather than corrective cleanup.
For automation, print the start and end states and check the sweep in mono. Resonant high-pass movement can remove fundamental energy faster than expected, while a resonant low-pass can make one note jump forward. Leave headroom after the filter and store the chosen slope in the preset name so a later recall does not depend on the visible cutoff alone.
Variable Q, RTA and polarity checks
FilterBank’s parametric tools include variable-Q modes, allowing bandwidth behaviour to follow different correction or tone-shaping intentions. Compare a narrow resonance cut with a broader, lower-gain move on the same problem frequency; the smaller surgical curve may measure neatly while the broader move translates more naturally in the arrangement. Within the HD edition, the real-time analyser can support that decision in AAX Native, AU and VST3, but McDSP notes that the RTA is not available in every processing format.
Independent left and right polarity control is also available. Treat it as a routing and phase diagnostic, not as an automatic stereo enhancer. Check the track source in mono, inspect the recording chain and document any channel-specific inversion. FilterBank should correct a known relationship rather than create a wider meter reading whose centre disappears elsewhere.
FilterBank on AAX DSP paths
In the HD edition, the HD edition is relevant when E606, F202 or P606 must remain on an HDX tracking or large-session DSP path. Plan which filters are cue-critical and which can stay Native. Because McDSP limits the RTA to AAX Native, AU and VST3, evaluate the actual DSP interface and metering rather than assuming every Native visual aid follows the instance onto AAX DSP.
Match one DSP and Native preset, then check automation, polarity, side routing and printed level. If a resonant F202 move or shaped E606 shelf changes downstream headroom, archive the reference bounce with the routing note.
