Channel strips and modular mixing systems

Save disabled templates rather than loading every option on every track; a large collection becomes useful when it shortens choices, not when it makes the session harder to recall.

Equalizers for corrective, active and character work

The EQ category ranges from the focused 4020 Retro EQ to FilterBank, 6020 Ultimate EQ and the AE400 and AE600 Active EQ processors. Active EQ is useful when a band should react to signal conditions instead of applying one static curve throughout the performance. AE400 and AE600 differ in band architecture and control scope, while 6020 is designed around multiple EQ modules. The choice is about topology: one direct envelope, detailed curve and detector design, explicit serial/parallel routing, or fast comparison among several compressor modules. Regional and peak-control options include MC2000, 6034 Ultimate Multi-band, 4040 Retro Limiter, ML4000 and ML8000. Use multiband processing only when frequency regions need genuinely different dynamics. A broadband compressor is simpler when the whole source shares one envelope problem. Limiters belong at the point where peaks must be contained or delivery level must be tested; they should not conceal an unresolved mix balance.

Noise reduction, dialogue and spectral problem solving

NF575 and NR800 solve different noise problems. NF575 combines boundary filters, notches and analysis for stable hum, rumble, hiss or known resonances. NR800 is designed for real-time multiband noise reduction and requires careful artefact monitoring. DE555 focuses on de-essing and harshness, while SA-2 is aimed at dialogue processing. The SA-3 Spectral Processor uses a much denser spectral approach and should be evaluated as its own design rather than as a larger SA-2.

For restoration, save an untouched source and process the least destructive stage first. Check consonants, cymbal tails, room tone and musical decay after every reduction. In post work, monitor dialogue in context with ambience and music; in production, confirm that removing noise does not make the performance unnaturally static. Print reversible alternates when a later editor or mix engineer may need a different compromise.

Delay, reverb, convolution and creative texture

EC-300 Echo Collection, Revolver Convolution Reverb, FutzVerb and FutzBox cover several different creative paths. EC-300 centres on echo character and modulation. Revolver works with convolution and impulse-response editing. FutzVerb combines space with deliberately altered texture, while FutzBox is a SIM-based degradation and device-treatment tool rather than a conventional reverb. Route them on dedicated returns when wet level, tails and CPU need independent control.

Keep custom impulse responses and their usage rights with the project. Print complete tails for collaboration, but retain dry audio. For electronic production, automate one or two meaningful controls instead of stacking several full-spectrum effects. For transitions, test the sound in the final arrangement so filtered noise, sub-octave content or distorted repeats do not compete with the next drop.

Native, HD and upgrade editions

McDSP Native products support AAX Native, AU and VST3. HD products additionally support AAX DSP for compatible Pro Tools HDX workflows and are also listed for the Native formats. McDSP explains that Native and HD use the same algorithms; the practical distinction is DSP access. If a studio does not use compatible HDX or VENUE hardware, the Native edition is normally the relevant comparison.
