MiniBit (AudioThing)
This simple synth emulates a solid assortment of classic chiptune sounds, with a range of 18 low-bit oscillators to start off the fun, and add filtering, delay and reverb to keep the party going. To make things even more interesting, there’s envelope and LFO controls included as well.
It may not seem like much, but MiniBit’s scant control set is a tribute to the lack of options you got on primitive digital synths – and at just £18, the price makes it all worthwhile.
FameBoy (for Kontakt)
If you’ve got yourself the full version of Native Instruments’ Kontakt, and you’re after some classic Game Boy drum sounds, then Fameboy could be just the ticket at £30.
It comes fully loaded with some classic Game Boy drum sounds, and gives you sequencing powers to put them all together. But you don’t need to use the default chiptune samples to get going with this – you can also replace the samples with your own, or just swap something out, still keeping the sequencing power behind Fameboy.
Effects here include a bitcrusher, saturation, ‘Slam’ compression, EQ, stereo width and more, so there’s a lot of transformation you can do to your Game Boy sounds!
Plogue Chipsounds
Built to model many different 8-bit synth chips, Shipsounds is a Who’s Who of low-bit noisemaking circuits. This line-up features chips used in the Atari 2600, Nintendo’s NES and GameBoy, ZX and classic arcade chips, the Commodore 64’s SID chip, and more besides.
Chipsounds doesn’t pull any punches in emulating the original chips, warts and all, being sure to model the errors and quirks that were exploited by video game composers and sound designers of the past.
You can layer up to eight of these retro sounds at the same time, and Chipsounds lets you take control of their sound-producing parameters just like any other synth – although the control set is a bit more complex, of course.
Enkl (Klevgrand)
This simple, two-oscillator, teal-coloured monster keeps things flat, aesthetically, but there’s a whole load of cool, bubbling simple sounds that can conjure up chiptune nostalgia and more besides.
Those two oscillators have a choice of sine, ramp, square and noise waves, and they can be modulated with AM or FM movement. There’s loads of global options in the centre, including filtering, glide, and a particularly tasty arpeggiator.
One interesting thing about Enkl is that its envelopes and LFOs are joined together, meaning that your LFO will change depth with the envelope’s properties for every note played.
