In this video I’m going to tell you what Slam XL brings to the table and show you how it sounds. It’s all coming up. So, let’s get into it. So, as I said in the beginning of the video, Slam XL is a channel strip emulation. It has a bunch of high-quality effects inside it that one might usually find on a master buss that are used to get a tighter, wider and fatter sound easily and quickly. A quick tour of the plug reveals a 3 band EQ with band size adjuster, crossover frequency selection and gain knobs which a built-in low-cut filter for quick cuts of that lower end over on the left side of the GUI. A bus style compressor is in the top right with all the controls one might need at their disposal. A one knob limiter to get your tracks loud, a great and necessary addition for when using Slam XL on the master channel as you last line of offense. There is even a 3-band stereo expander based on Mid/Side technology completed with crossover controls. Here you can make your highs wide and your lows narrow. All of these modules can be turned on or off at the click of a button if you just want to bypass them. In the middle we have a 3 LED metering system. The right is for the input, the left is the output and the middle LED is for any gain reduction that may be happening. Now, we get to the focus of Slam XL. Get 6 distinct saturation flavors to choose from. These have been captured from various analog equipment both new and vintage to give you anywhere from “smooth” to “crunchy” styles. I personally find them to get progressively crunchier going from top to bottom and left to right. The way I like to approach my saturation/distortion is to crank it full on at 100% drive and 100% wet to really get a taste of the saturation’s profile, then roll back on the drive and dry/wet mix until my audio is tastefully colored to perfection.
