hello and welcome back to another video
I’m Michael you are watching in the mix
and today we’re going to show you how to
get your song ready for mixing or
mastering we’re going to be showing you
how to export all of the stems in your
track both with and without effects in a
really simple and easy manner this will
get it ready to send it to a mixing or
mastering engineer so that they can pull
it into their own project and start
working on your song you might be
wondering why you want to prepare your
song from mixing or mastering this way
for the mastering side of things we tend
to do this just so that we can export a
final mix and pull it into a new project
so that our computer can cope a little
bit better with the high demands of
mastering plugins oftentimes producers
do an awesome job of creating a really
really stunning and musical instrumental
and mixing it the way they want to in
their room but then they take it to the
car or they try to listen to it on their
phone and it just Falls to pieces and
the reason for this is because their
room that they produce in is lying to
them it’s telling them there’s more bass
than there is or there’s less bass than
there is except I’ve I’ve oversimplified
the problem but producing in a bedroom
has so many problems and sometimes it’s
good to just export your song without
the effects send it to someone else
and then they can do all the finishing
touches on it and make your mix sound
exactly the way that you wanted it to
sound we’re going to be demonstrating
this effect in FL Studio 12 but you can
do this in any major da W the first
thing we’re going to do is show you how
to export your song ready from mixing so
you should make sure that your mix isn’t
clipping now a lot of people say give it
3 to 6 DB of headroom it doesn’t really
matter how much Headroom you give as
long as there are a few dB you can raise
the level later or cut it down but if it
clips there’s nothing you can do to go
back and unclip that audio to explore
all the tracks in your song the way you
want you to need to make sure that every
single piece of audio on the playlist is
sent to a mixer track in most da WS this
will be done automatically but in FL
studio you must make sure that you’ve
sent everything to its own individual
mixer track or at least some of
them together on two bus channels this
way when we explore every single sound
will be accounted for after sending
everything to its own mixer channel you
need to select the whole duration of
your song including time for any decays
or reverbs or delays to trail off at the
end of your song making sure that you
don’t cut any of those off so select
your whole song and then navigate to the
file menu and you want to click file
sport and then wave file now you want to
make a folder or find a folder on your
computer that you want to export into
and create two folders name one of them
dry and one of them went this is where
we’re going to export all of the stems
to and then select the wet folder once
you’ve selected this wet folder you’re
going to want to name your audio
something useful so this export dialog
box will open up and I’ll leave all the
settings you need in the description but
you can see the settings we have here
24-bit wav file make sure that you leave
insert effects on and the really
important thing is to check split mixer
tracks so this will export every single
track on your mixer simultaneously which
is a pretty neat trick and all you have
to do is click start and your song will
export repeat this process for the dry
folder so file export WAV file navigate
to the dry folder and name it something
useful again then take a look at these
settings here so everything’s the same
but we’re gonna uncheck enable insert
effects and this means that the effects
you’ve put onto your audio your
compression your reverbs your eq’s all
of those will be bypassed and the reason
we do this is because it gives a mixing
engineer the opportunity to use either
your affected stems or the raw stamps so
if they like the decisions you made you
can stick with it but if they’d rather
do something a little bit differently
they have that option as well simply
click start and your song will be
exporting all the mixer tracks
altogether without the effects if you
have a really large song you’ll probably
have hundreds and hundreds of exported
WAV files at this point which will be
taking up an awful lot of space so the
folder it might need to be compressed
just to save a little bit of space this
isn’t always a problem but if you do
have to file share online you may want
to compress this into a zipped folder
make sure you use a lossless format and
that’s your song ready to be sent off
and mixed by someone else just like that
so the next part of this video is going
to be focusing on how to get your mix
ready from mastering so if you’ve done
all your mixing yourself you absolutely
love it and you’re ready to master your
song but maybe your computer is
struggling with the high demands of
mastering processors you might want to
export a mix and pull it into a clean
session and then start your mastering
chain from scratch make sure you’re
happy with your final mix make sure that
the levels of everything are the way you
want them to be in that everything
sounds balanced and nothing
clipping and select the whole duration
of the song you can add a little bit on
either side if you want to because
you’ll be cutting it again in the
mastering phase go to file export WAV
file name it something useful final mix
might be a good idea but you know you
can name it whatever you like and this
time make sure that you uncheck split
mixer tracks you don’t want to export 50
100 200 tracks worth of audio here you
just want to export your final mix and
then simply click start and your song
will export this will be ready to be
dragged into a clean session and then
you can start adding as many effects as
you like knowing that your computer will
probably have a much higher chance of
coping with your mastering and you’ll be
able to get your songs sounding exactly
the way you want – as you may know, we’re
open to mixing and mastering music for
other people if you are interested
please feel free to send us an email
I’ve left it in the description box
hopefully, this video has shown you how
to get ready for mixing and mastering
your song if you have any ideas for
future videos please leave them in the
comment section down below thank you
very much for watching see you in the
next one

About In The Mix

In The Mix is all about simplifying the recording, production, mixing, and mastering process and helping you unlock your creativity. No matter which DAW you use or what equipment you have, I’m determined to help you succeed. I try to share as much as I can about the industry and give an insight into the world of music production and the business behind it by showing you how to release and sell your music online. Being an FL Studio Power User I also focus tutorials on getting the most out of FL Studio, My DAW of choice. Micahel Wynne is a recording artist and mixing engineer with a passion for teaching (and instant ramen). In 2015 I discovered my enthusiasm for music and audio; I learned how to record and produce songs in my university student room with a just cheap laptop and FL Studio. After several months of working in audio sessions between school assignments, I decided to leave uni with a 2-year engineering diploma to pursue a career in music. I wanted to learn everything I could about the industry and the artistic process, so I started making original music as half of the duo “Miavono”. In late 2016 I began my journey on YouTube, sharing my knowledge and experiences with audio in the form of tutorials on “In The Mix”. I quickly grew a community of over 120,000 producers, artists, and audio professionals, a group of people whose passions aligned with mine. Last year I built my own home studio from the ground up in my back garden, set in the rural highlands of Scotland, and have since been supported by and involved with some of the greatest people in the industry.
