In this video, Berklee Online instructors Bonnie Hayes and Sarah Brindell talk about the vocals as the centerpiece of a song. They explain that in order for the lead vocals to shine, they need to be in their own frequency range and rhythmic space, and that the instruments and accompanying parts shouldn’t get in the way. They compare it to a photograph of someone in front of a mountain range: the person is like the lead vocals, and the accompaniment should be in the background like the mountains. You have to avoid a “photobomb” of overlapping parts!
