How We Built Our New Music Studio

Our Brand New Song ‘No Way Out’ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPgSJfQfX6Q

Welcome to another video, in this video Brad and I show you how we built our new studio. This project took 4 weeks from start to finish with the help of my Grandfather.
After discussing plans, we set about pouring a concrete base and ordering materials.

With the help of my grandfather in the first week, we learned how to measure, cut, assemble all the sections. The longest part of the build were the finishing details like sanding, painting, electrics etc.

We did every step ourselves with the exception of signing off on the electrical work which must be done by a certified professional (or you break the law!) The internal electrics were done by ourselves too.

We tried to film a lot but we were pushed to get it done is a short time frame. Below is some information about what we used and why.
Materials:
Walls are timber frames
From inside to out :
Three layers of paint – Double layer of plasterboard – Vapour membrane – 100 mm Rock wool – 18 mm OSB – Breather membrane – Timber batons – Outer Ship lap cladding with coats of stain

The Double layer of plasterboard helps minimise sound transmission. The rock wool is thermal and acoustic insulation. OSB and Timber provide a solid structure and a weather barrier with the breather membrane. The outer cladding traps a bubble of air which is heated by the sun too keep the building warmer and looks beautiful.

Roof is similar but was finished with A very heavy duty DPM and then corrugated sheeting called “Coroline” with absorbs the sound of the rain and wind.

We sourced all the materials locally and tried to be as eco friendly as possible, due to our diet we have an incredibly low carbon footprint so we always try to minimise damage to the environment.
We ended up with one bag of waste and off cuts, most of which will be burned in the fire or recycled.

All in all it was great fun and opened out eyes to the world of construction and DIY. We missed building it so much that we built a wood shed the following week using the leftovers.

About In The Mix

In The Mix is all about simplifying the recording, production, mixing and mastering process and helping you unlock your creativity. No matter which DAW you use or what equipment you have, I’m determined to help you succeed. I try to share as much as I can about the industry and give an insight into the world of music production and the business behind it by showing you how to release and sell your music online.

Being an FL Studio Power User I also focus tutorials on getting the most out of FL Studio, My DAW of choice.

Micahel Wynne is a recording artist and mixing engineer with a passion for teaching (and instant ramen).
In 2015 I discovered my enthusiasm for music and audio; I learned how to record and produce songs in my university student room with a just cheap laptop and FL Studio. After several months of working in audio sessions between school assignments, I decided to leave uni with a 2-year engineering diploma to pursue a career in music. I wanted to learn everything I could about the industry and the artistic process, so I started making original music as half of the duo “Miavono”.

In late 2016 I began my journey on YouTube, sharing my knowledge and experiences with audio in the form of tutorials on “In The Mix”. I quickly grew a community of over 120,000 producers, artists, and audio professionals, a group of people whose passions aligned with mine. Last year I built my own home studio from the ground up in my back garden, set in the rural highlands of Scotland, and have since been supported by and involved with some of the greatest people in the industry.
