In this free tutorial, Berklee College of Music professor and Berklee Online course author and instructor Loudon Stearns explores sound design in FXpansion’s Tremor synthesizer.

First, we go to the mixer to see what is being mixed together to create the raw sound of the snare sound. Then, we look at the Oscillator section and how it has been used to create a nice low thump with an inharmonic ring like a real snare. Then, when we add in the noise we get that nice powerful “gunshot” sound of a powerful electronic snare sound. A slow envelope modulating the “space” parameter of the “Harmonics” section, which adds a nice evolution to the patch. Finally, we hear how the filter has been used to give a little bit of a low end thump and a high frequency roll-off.

After exploring the oscillator and filter sections of the snare engine, we move to the effects and see how the Synth Fx are unique to each engine and can be modulated individually, but the Master FX are applied to the entire kit. In the FX section, I love the “Tin Can” reverb, mainly because it sounds great when modulated; particularly when using a tempo synch’d LFO to modulate the “Pinch” parameter.
